Hybrid Control Panel (v10)

Managing Active Sync Policies

Exchange ActiveSync is a synchronization protocol which allows mobile/handheld devices to synchronize mailboxes, calendar, contacts, and tasks with Exchange. Users of mobile devices can access their email wherever they are and can connect to Exchange over the air. HC10 provides an interface to the creation of ActiveSync policies and various policy settings. These policies can then be assigned to individual mailboxes.

To manage active sync policies, from top right corner of your screen, click  and then go to Exchange Module Configuration >> Active Sync Policies.

Active Sync Policies page shows list of existing policies with additional information as:

  • Policy Name - shows name of the policy.
  • Status - shows status of the policy such as default/non-default. To set default policy click Set as Default under Actions column.
  • Actions - allow admins to perform various actions such as edit, set as default, and delete policies. When the Exchange Server is installed an Active Sync policy is created by default. This is known as the default policy and is assigned to all new mailboxes by default. However, any new policy can also be set as default. Policies can also be set as default through Hosting Controller.

Creating a Policy

To create an Active Sync policy, click + Create Active Sync Policy and specify required information to proceed.

  • Policy Name: It is name of the policy.
  • Non Provisionable Devices: These devices are older phones which do not support application of all policy settings.  Enabling the Allow checkbox means that these older devices are allowed to connect to Exchange via ActiveSync. This may have security implications.
  • Attachments: Select Enabled checkbox to allow attachments to be downloaded to mobile devices.
  • Device Password: It enables the mobile device password.
  • Alphanumeric Device Password: Enabling this option requires that the device password contains numeric and non-numeric characters.
  • Password Recovery: If this is enabled, the mobile device generates a recovery password that's sent to the server. If the user forgets their handheld device password, the recovery password can be used to unlock the mobile device and enable the user to create a new mobile device password.
  • Device Encryption: Enabling this option requires encryption on the mobile device.
  • Simple Password: Enabling this option allows the device to keep a simple password such as 2345
  • Min. Password Length: It specifies the minimum number of characters in the mobile device password. You can enter any number from 1 through 16. The default value is 4.
  • Max Inactivity Time Device Lock: It specifies the length of time that a mobile device can go without user input before it locks and a password is required to reactivate it. You can enter any interval between 30 seconds and 1 hour. The default value is 15 minutes.
  • Device Password Expiration: It enables the administrator to configure a length of time after which a mobile device password must be changed.
  • Enforce Password History: It specifies the number of previous passwords that can be stored in a user's mailbox. A user can't reuse a stored password.
